United States Air Force Marathon Introduces New Half MarathonWRIGHT PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE – OH – The United States Air Force Marathon features a new flat and fast half marathon course for this year’s marathon events. This year’s course will include a scenic loop instead of the traditional out and back. The flatter and faster course incorporates much more of the base including several historical and scenic sights. Beginning in Area B of Wright Patterson Air Force Base runners travel 13.1 miles past beautiful tree-lined Marl Road, historic brick quarters and along the outer edge of Wright State University. Runners looking to participate in this year's U.S. Air Force Marathon events should plan to register before the price increase after August 1. All races except for the 5K will increase in price by $10 while the 5K will increase by $5. Online registration fees are encouraged to ensure accuracy and are also less expensive than mail-in applications. According to Assistant Race Director Rob Augiar, the new course offers runners something really special, “The course takes runners along the backside of the base near Huffman Prairie where they have never been before. The scenery is well worth it.” Huffman prairie includes over 70 acres of historic land where the Wright Brothers first flew. Because a majority of the race is located on base there are several designated areas for spectators but according to Augiar you won’t miss them, “The new scenery and route itself will make up for the lack of spectators. That’s what really excites me about this race.” The half marathon race is increasing in popularity among runners nationwide. The Air Force Half Marathon has seen a steady increase of 500 plus runners each year since 2006. The half continues to be one of the most popular races not only with the U.S. Air Force Marathon but across the country as well. According to Running USA’s 2008 State of the Sport report, the half marathon has been the fastest growing road race distance in the United States. The U.S. Air Force Marathon running events will be held over two days. The marathon, half-marathon, and 10k will be held September 19, 2009 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The 5k will be co-hosted with Wright State University on September 18, 2009 on their main campus. For more information to volunteer or register, please visit www.usafmarathon.com.
